The ever-beautiful Langkawi Island is well known for its numerous sightseeing attractions, gastronomic venues and fun-filled activities. Langkawi International Airport which plays host to Malaysia’s premier biennial Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) is the island’s only airfield. Located within Padang Matsirat, approximately 15 minutes away from Langkawi Island’s popular Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah stretch, the airport bears the requisite airport facilities and maintains its no-frills features. This aviation hub has a strip filled with indispensable stores and a few eateries sprinkled along the astretch.

Arrival Hall

The airport is a very uncomplicated and an easy-to-navigate place. Once you disembark from your plane, you’ll walk along the blazing hot tarmac towards the airport terminal. Once you enter the terminal you’ll see the counter for car rentals along the right-hand corridor – however word to the wise, you’re better off booking a vehicle online as you’re likely to get cheaper rates. If you need to grab some grub and shop after your flight, along the Arrival Hall stretch you can find a few restaurants and shopping venues such as Polo, Kenny Rogers, G-shock and Starbucks.

Domestic Arrival Hall

The Departure Hall stretch – adjacent to the Arrival Hall strip – has a few stores including a Duty-Free Zone and Skymall. This stretch is mostly packed with people during the afternoon and evening flights – you’ll likely be waiting in line for a while as you proceed with your check-in.

Transportation to Langkawi Airport

Bus

As there is no public transportation system available around Langkawi Island it would be best if you either hired a taxi or rented a vehicle – either a car or motorcycle. Since the rates for taxis can be very high it would probably be worth your dollar to rent your own means of transport.

Taxi

Taxis are available at the airport – if you’re interested, buy a coupon at the desk in the Arrival Hall and proceed outside to the sidewalk and hand your coupon to one of the cab drivers there. Rates to the different destinations vary of course; you’ll likely pay around RM24 to get to the Kuah jetty or Pantai Cenang, while a trip to Pantai Kok or Teluk Datai will cost you RM28. Further destinations, like Tanjung Rhu, will most likely cost you approximately RM35.

Car

Car rentals are reasonably priced on Langkawi Island – yet if you’re prudent enough and book a vehicle online, you’re sure to get better deals. There is a car rental counter near the exit of the Arrival Hall – they offer standard rates and seldom bargain so you would do better by trying your luck with the travel agency representatives who will assail you upon arrival outside the Arrival Hall. They’ll shout out rates to you as you walk by and they offer better bargains than the airport counter inside – especially if you negotiate properly.

Miscellaneous

Money

The Langkawi Airport only has one bank – Maybank – situated beside the Arrival Hall door beside the Starbucks café. This bank also doubles as a money exchange location. Opening Hours: 09:15 – 16:30 Monday – Thursday; 09:15 –16:00 Friday

ATM

If you’re running low on funds, truthfully Langkawi Airport doesn’t have many ATM machines. There are Al-Rajhi and Maybank ATM machines located opposite Polo and beside the G-Shock store at the Arrival Hall.

Public phones

If you need to make a phone call then head to the Arrival Hall exit – here you’ll find a bank of phones. You can use Malaysian coins, a phone card purchased at the Skymall or the Duty Free Zone or your credit card to operate them.

Trolleys

If you’re luggage-laden and would like some help, then grab a trolley – at no charge – at the curb-side of the Arrival Hall or the Departure Hall.
